The Everglades National Park is a 1.5-million-acre wetlands preserve at the southern tip of Florida in the United States. In the painting "Water Diversion: The Everglades" by David Ralph, the abundance of biodiversity and variety of ecosystems is clearly evident. More subtle, though, is the enormous threat that this amazing wonderland is under due to the diversion of huge amounts of water to the large metropolis of Miami 25 miles to the northeast. The vast river of fresh-water sawgrass in the Everglades moves at a snails pace as it descends south from Lake Okeechobee to the brackish marshland of Florida Bay. The wet season brings large amounts of rainfall, flooding, violent storms and powerful hurricanes. In contrast, the dry season brings extreme heat, wildfires, and low precipitation. David's style of painting and illustration can best be described as geometric abstraction with influences ranging from the cubist paintings of Pablo Picasso to the primitive, cutout shapes of Henri Matisse.
