Artist's Description

In the painting titled "Ocean Acidification: The Great Barrier Reef" by David Ralph, the natural wonders of The Great Barrier Reef off the northeast coast of Australia in Queensland reveal a startling reality. They are dying. The spectacular colors and variety of the coral on the reef - living organisms that feed and protect thousands of marine species - are bleaching to a stark white. This bleaching is a precursor to a decayed and dying gray. And with this dying coral environment, so goes all the amazing treasures of fish and other marine creatures. Because of the rising seas from global warming, the small island beaches which house the buried eggs of sea turtles are slowly being swallowed up by the ocean. Baby turtle hatchlings already face tremendous dangers as tiger sharks and other predators lurk off the island surf waiting for an easy meal.
