Description
The Everglades National Park is a 1.5-million-acre wetlands preserve at the southern tip of Florida in the United States. In the painting "Water Diversion: The Everglades" by David Ralph, the abundance of biodiversity and variety of ecosystems is clearly evident. More subtle, though, is the enormous threat that this amazing wonderland is under due to the diversion of huge amounts of water to the large metropolis of Miami 25 miles to the northeast. The vast river of fresh-water sawgrass in the Everglades moves at a snails pace as it descends south from Lake Okeechobee to the brackish marshland of Florida Bay. The wet season brings large amounts of rainfall, flooding, violent storms and powerful hurricanes. In contrast, the dry season brings extreme heat, wildfires, and low precipitation. During these times, many species migrate to the slightly-elevated hammocks of shaded forest lands and small fresh-water ponds. Here is where two competing species can come into conflict, like the American Alligator and the invasive Burmese Python. If you are extremely lucky, you may catch a glimpse of the endangered and very elusive Florida panther in the upper portion of the park. Seeing the "beware" sign along the road is pretty scary in itself. The Everglades also brings two ancestor species into close proximity: the American Alligator and the American Crocodile. As one moves south, fresh water gives way to the brackish, moderately-salty waters of Florida Bay where acres of mangroves, winding waterways, and thousands of sea birds dominate. In these canals, the occasional crocodile suns itself along its banks while the gentle West Indian Manatee (also endangered) wades near the hazardous docks of sporting boats.
