Description
This original watercolor painting of the endangered mountain lion of southern California (14"h x 11"w) by David Ralph is part of a climate series that David has produced over the past few years. In this painting, David explores how the urban sprawl of southern California has squeezed the habitat of the great cat more and more each decade. The LA freeway system continues to encroach on the range of the lion while vehicle collisions with the cats are becoming deadly for the species. Housing developments are constantly being constructed further and further up into the dry mountain ranges bordering the city limits, and rat pesticides along with more frequent coyote contacts threaten the mountain lion with illness. And combined with other climate forces like wild fires, smog, heat, soil erosion, infrequent rainfall, and the physical limitations due to geographic isolation, the big cats dwindling habitat is becoming hostile to its survival.
Other paintings in the series include "Global Warming: The Polar Bear", "Overhunting: The American Bison", "Water Diversion: The Everglades", "Ocean Acidification: The Great Barrier Reef", and the "Habitat Loss: Mountain Gorilla". All paintings feature a well-known, often large, endangered animal that the general public, and especially children, can connect with and learn about their struggles with survival.
