This original watercolor painting of the endangered mountain lion of southern California (14"h x 11"w) by David Ralph is part of a climate series that David has produced over the past few years. In this painting, David explores how the urban sprawl of southern California has squeezed the habitat of the great cat more and more each decade. The LA freeway system continues to encroach on the range of the lion while vehicle collisions with the cats are becoming deadly for the species. Housing developments are constantly being constructed further and further up into the dry mountain ranges bordering the city limits, and rat pesticides along with more frequent coyote contacts threaten the mountain lion with illness. And combined with other climate forces like wild fires, smog, heat, soil erosion, infrequent rainfall, and the physical limitations due to geographic isolation, the big cats dwindling habitat is becoming hostile to its survival.

About David Ralph
David Ralph is a contemporary artist and illustrator currently living in Maryland. David's style of painting and illustration can best be described as geometric abstraction with influences ranging from the cubist paintings of Pablo Picasso to the primitive, cutout shapes of Henri Matisse. Other notable influences for David were Paul Cezanne's fragmented landscapes and the geometrically-divided, flat-color canvases of Piet Mondrian.
