The American Bison, a large herbivore which roamed the vast grasslands of North American for centuries in huge herds in the tens of millions, nearly went extinct by 1880 by commercial and wasteful overhunting. Thousands of American settlers moving westward on the newly-introduced railroad trains killed these bovines for sport, adventure, and as a tactic to eliminate the Native American tribes in their way. This expansion brought these settlers into direct conflict with the various Native American tribes like the Sioux and Cheyenne that lived in the middle of the continent. Many of these tribes, before the introduction of the gun by the European American settlers, lived in harmony and balance with these animals and their culture was intertwined with the existence of these American buffalo.
