This abstract, geometric watercolor of Annapolis, the state capitol of Maryland, captures the essence of this old colonial seaside town on the Chesapeake Bay. Annapolis, a former U.S. Capitol and historic city born in the 17th century, is a city of yachts, docks, fine art galleries, and dining establishments. Seafood, steak, raw shellfish, and ale accompany the plates and silverware of the local eateries. General George Washington once walked the streets of Annapolis, seat of the former Second Continental Congress, to resign his commission as commander of the Continental Army. Buildings of assembly, Navy midshipmen, brick streets, elegant lamps, and quaint shingle-style homes dominate the angular streets and circular intersections of Annapolis.
David Ralph is a contemporary artist and illustrator currently living in Maryland. David's style of painting and illustration can best be described as geometric abstraction with influences ranging from the cubist paintings of Pablo Picasso to the primitive, cutout shapes of Henri Matisse. Other notable influences for David were Paul Cezanne's fragmented landscapes and the geometrically-divided, flat-color canvases of Piet Mondrian. To David, the simple elegance of the curve, the line, and the circle create the ideal two-dimensional plain of visual interest and appeal.
